Volleyball is a game of streaks, and the North Star Lady Knights and Centerville Lady Miners traded them all night in a five-set battle Thursday evening that Centerville ultimately won 3-2.

Set one set the tone for the back-and-forth match. North Star jumped out to an early 12-10 lead before Centerville rallied to go up 16-12\. The Lady Knights fought back to tie the set at 17, but Centerville pulled away down the stretch to take the opener 25-19.

North Star responded immediately in set two, jumping out to a 10-4 lead that forced a Centerville timeout. The teams traded points out of the break before Centerville cut the deficit to 13-9\. North Star answered with another run to extend the lead to 19-11, and after trading a few more side-outs, the Lady Knights closed out an impressive 25-16 win to even the match.

Set three was more of the same. North Star built an early 11-7 lead, prompting a Centerville timeout to regroup. The Lady Miners rallied to within a point at 12-11, but North Star pulled away again, extending the lead to 19-14\. Centerville made one more push, cutting it to 20-18, but North Star had enough left down the stretch to win 25-19 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Centerville came out with urgency in set four, jumping to an early 5-2 lead and extending it to 11-8 before North Star called timeout to try to slow the momentum. Centerville kept rolling to an 18-14 advantage before North Star came storming back, cutting the gap to 19-18\. Centerville answered again to lead 22-19, and North Star pulled within two at 22-20 before Centerville scored twice more to lead 24-20\. North Star made one final push, but Centerville held on for a 25-22 win to force a deciding fifth set.

The fifth set, played to 15 with a win by two required, saw Centerville jump out to a 7-3 lead and extend it to 14-7\. North Star was not finished, scoring four straight points to make it 14-11 and forcing a Centerville timeout. But Centerville came out of the break and scored the match's final point to win 15-11 and take the match 3 sets to 2.

The loss stings for North Star, but the numbers tell a story of just how evenly matched these two teams were. The Lady Knights actually outscored Centerville 102-100 across the full match, a reflection of the tight margins in nearly every set.

The result brings both teams to 1-1 early in the season, and with plenty of volleyball left in this young season all signs point toward a strong season for the North Star Lady Knights.
