CJI's four-game winning streak came to an end on Big Sandy's Senior Night, as the Pioneers used a monster performance from senior Karter Jurenka to beat the Hawks 44-24 on Friday. CJI came in having knocked off Jordan, North Star, Power/Dutton-Brady, and a number one ranked Burlington, Wyoming team over its previous four games, but Big Sandy had an answer for nearly everything the Hawks threw at them. The Pioneers' win knocks the Hawks out of the #1 seed in the North, and has significant implications in the post season schedule.

The two teams were tied twice in the first half. Levi Nelson's seven-yard touchdown run tied it at 6-6 in the first quarter after Big Sandy senior Jaxon Jones opened the scoring on a 26-yard touchdown catch from senior quarterback Rodewald. Brody Fossen found Ryan Ramberg on a two-yard touchdown pass to put CJI up 12-6, but Big Sandy answered twice more before halftime, a short touchdown run from Aiden Morissette that tied it at 12-12, then a 20-yard touchdown pass from Rodewald with the extra point good to make it 12-20 at the break.

CJI answered to open the second half, with Levi Nelson breaking a 76-yard touchdown run on the first play of the third quarter to cut it to 18-20\. Jurenka answered right back with a 65-yard touchdown run of his own to make it 18-28, and later added a three-yard touchdown run to push the Big Sandy lead to 18-36\. Ryan Ramberg found Jace Ramberg for a 35-yard touchdown to answer for CJI, cutting it to 24-36, but Big Sandy closed it out with a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to make it 24-44, and the score held from there.

Jurenka was the difference in the game. He carried the ball 25 times for 284 yards and two touchdowns, with a long run of 65 yards, and chipped in 53 yards passing and 28 yards receiving for 337 yards of total offense on the night. He also sealed the win with an interception in the fourth quarter. Jurenka entered the night among the state's leaders in Montana 6-man total yards and ranked among the top five in rushing yards, and this kind of performance is exactly how he got there.

Levi Nelson came into this game as the state 6-man leader in rushing yards. He led CJI's offense with 15 carries for 166 yards and two touchdowns, the second a 76-yard breakaway to open the third quarter. With junior quarterback Avery DeVries out, sophomore Brody Fossen started at quarterback, completing 3 of 10 passes for 7 yards and a touchdown and adding 22 yards on 5 carries. Ryan Ramberg was all over the field, catching 3 passes for 17 yards and a touchdown, carrying the ball 5 times for 30 yards, completing 1 of 4 passes for 62 yards and a touchdown, and punting twice for a 27-yard average. Jace Ramberg's 35-yard touchdown catch from his brother was one of the biggest plays of the night for CJI.

CJI's defense had a strong night even in the loss. Sophomore Shane Woods led the team with 9 tackles, including 2 for a loss, and added 3 sacks for 24 yards, one of the best individual defensive performances the Hawks have had all season. Fellow sophomore Connor Mattson backed him up with 8 tackles of his own. Levi Nelson added 7 tackles, and Ryan Ramberg finished with 5 tackles and 2 interceptions off Big Sandy quarterback Rodewald. Woods and Mattson are both just sophomores, and performances like this suggest they will be impact players on that side of the ball for years to come.

Ramberg went out late in the fourth quarter with an injury. He had already turned in one of the most complete performances of any CJI player this season, touching the ball on offense, defense, and special teams, and his night deserves recognition regardless of how it ended.

With the loss after a bye week, CJI will need to regroup quickly. Big Sandy's win changes the North division's seeding, and means the Hawks will likely be hitting the road for most of what comes next in the postseason. With two home games left to finish out the season, they will be looking to get back in the win column as they work to get healthy and prepared for the November grind.
